Hidden deep within the lush greenery of Sylhet lies a natural wonder like no other โ Ratargul Swamp Forest.
Itโs one of the few freshwater swamp forests in Bangladesh, and during the monsoon season, it feels like entering a living dream โ trees half-submerged in water, sunlight filtering through the canopy, and boats gliding silently between the branches.
The first time I visited, I felt like I had stepped into another world. The stillness of the forest, the reflections in the water, and the occasional call of a bird created a sense of calm that words can barely capture.
Background & About the Place
Ratargul Swamp Forest is located in Gowainghat Upazila, about 26 km from Sylhet city. It sits along the Gowain River, covering approximately 500 acres, and is the only natural freshwater swamp forest in Bangladesh.
The forest remains flooded for several months each year, typically from June to October, when it becomes accessible by small boats. Beneath the water lies a vibrant ecosystem of fish, snakes, and aquatic plants โ while above, youโll see birds resting on tree branches and sunlight shimmering on the surface.
Ratargul is often called the โAmazon of Bangladeshโ, and rightly so โ itโs a world of silence, reflection, and pure nature.
My Experience
I visited Ratargul on a cloudy morning when the forest was fully submerged. Our boatman was a Baul singer, his gentle voice floating over the water as he rowed through the narrow channels between the trees. The only sounds were his melody and the soft rhythm of water brushing against the wooden boat.
As we drifted deeper, shafts of sunlight filtered through the branches, painting golden patterns across the still surface. The forest felt peaceful โ almost sacred โ as if time had slowed down inside its watery heart.
I captured drone shots of the forestโs outer edges and low-altitude clips of the boats gliding beneath the canopy. Every frame felt magical โ a rare meeting of earth, water, music, and silence.
By the time we left, Ratargul had completely transformed my mood โ I felt quiet, grounded, and deeply connected to the rhythm of nature.
